HISTORICAL HERITAGE AND SOCIAL FUNCTION:
THE CASE OF THE CHURCH OF MERCY IN LAVRAS-MG
Abstract
An architectural work goes beyond the mere function of housing. It conveys messages, meanings and symbologies. Its meaning goes beyond constructive elements. The aim of this research was to carry out a historical and architectural survey of the Igreja das Mercês (Church of Mercy), in Lavras, in the state of Minas Gerais, between 1918 and 2018, seeking to relate the changes made to the work (the second oldest church in the city) and its relationship with memory, significance and social function tothe population of the city, mainly of the goers who frequent it. We used books, scientific articles, websites, photos and documents as sources for bibliographic research. We carried out interviews with a few Catholic people and those responsible for the administration of the church, mainly with those who coordinated the chapel in one of its most significant reforms, that of 2014. The analyses and data collections carried out contributed to reaffirm the initial hypothesis of the research about the list of structural changes in a building considered to be a city's historic heritage, which were essential to follow the evolution of social needs, thus seeking to compare historical, identity, social and architectural aspects.Attribution License that allows the sharing of the manuscript with acknowledgment of authorship and initial publication in this magazine.
