The role of physiotherapy in palliative care in patients with rheumatic diseases, a narrative review
Abstract
Introduction: Palliative care is currently becoming more widespread, with the aim of alleviating the suffering caused by chronic diseases. Rheumatic diseases are chronic, autoimmune, systemic, degenerative diseases that cause various symptoms such as intense pain. Objective: To understand the benefits of palliative care for patients with rheumatic diseases. Methodology: The study was a narrative review of the literature on the role of physiotherapy in palliative care and rheumatic diseases. To separate the articles, guiding questions were used as a basis for selection. Articles in Portuguese, English and Spanish were selected from the Scielo and Google Scholar platforms. Results: In the light of the research carried out, it was observed that little has been studied about the role of physiotherapy as part of the multidisciplinary team in the palliative care of various diseases outside the scope of oncology, such as rheumatic diseases. In view of the information obtained, a detailed study on the benefits of including rheumatology patients in palliative care was very important. Conclusion: Palliative care plays an important role in patients with rheumatic diseases, although it is not the first line of treatment for their general condition.
